When It Rains it Pours (Not Financial)

September 8th, 2013 at 05:21 am

I have been staying at my parents home as we found out in Oct last year that she has terminal cancer. She gets weaker by the day and is in the very end stage. I took my father to the doctor last week and he has also been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was admitted to the hospital today for the second time to drain fluid from one of his lungs. They say he has a malignant plueral effusion.

I will keep doing what I have been doing for them. If you believe in prayers please send lots my way, my family and I will need them as it looks like we might lose both our parents around the same time.

Thanks for listening, I just needed to get this off my chest.

You are in my prayers. I went through this with my aged parents. Your parents are very fortunate to have you and May God lead and bless you, and your parents.

If you feel up to it, I have suggestions based on my own experience.

Contact a hospice group and get their help. They are there for both your parents and you.

Make sure you know what they want for themselves - the medical establishment does what is good for itself, not necessarily the patient.

You may want a medical power of attorney and a financial one. This will help you. At all times, make sure you state you are NOT responsible for their bills. I know it sounds mean spirited, but you have to protect yourself.

    God bless you dear.

Thank you all. MzPat, all of what you mention is covered, as soon as my mother found out about her illness wills were updated and power of attorneys and medical directives made.

My thoughts are with you during this time. When your parents die it really feels like you're up next. Remember to take care of yourself at least a little bit.

I am so sorry. Being a caregiver is not easy. I have heard great things about hospice, and many say they regret not getting their loved one in hospice sooner. It's not just for the very end.

Thank you PatientSaver, my mother is on hospice, my father is still not sure if he will have any treatments etc. Thank you all for your kind words, I really appreciate it!
